Hi Rashid, Thanks for the e-mail you sent and all the pictures of different types of houses in Oman. They will be really useful for my talk on 'Homes in Oman past and present'. I hope you can come to my talk. You wanted some information for your talk on Sunday about what my granddad did in his free time when he was a boy. Well, as you know, nowadays we have computer games, videos, tv and all kinds of entertainment. 50 years ago, when my granddad was a boy, they didn't have these things so they made their own entertainment. It's interesting finding out about the games children played in the past. My granddad played a game with his friends called 'Hawalees'. They played this game with shells which they moved about in holes in the ground. The object of this game was to collect other people's shells by moving your shell across a hole with one of their shells in it. My granddad says it was very popular and people still play this game. It sounds fun! Also, you wanted to know about my granddad's daily routine. I have attached some drawings showing what he did when he was our age. I haven't got any photos because his family didn't have a camera. Hope this helps you with your talk. I'm really looking forward to the IKC conference. It will be really great to meet everyone. Wednesday Today was great! I went with my parents to visit some family friends who live in a barasti house. It was so interesting! The people who live there told us that their uncle built the house many years ago and he lived in it until he died last year. The walls and roof are made of palm branches and the house is right next to the sea. It was quite cool inside because the sea air came through the palm branches. I really liked it because it was very relaxing to sit and listen to the sounds of the sea. You don't see many barasti houses nowadays, so I'm really pleased that I had the opportunity to visit one. Especially as they were once an important part of Omani Life for many of our grandparents and great-grandparents.
